1 Introduction

Two main methods of grammar teaching were discussed: explicit teaching and implicit teaching. Explicit teaching focuses on language forms, while implicit teaching emphasizes the natural acquisition of grammar rules in meaningful contexts. The theory of construction grammar holds that the basic unit of grammar is construction, and each construction is a combination of form and meaning/usage. POA is a foreign language teaching method that emphasizes the combination of learning and application, which increases the frequency of learners' exposure to and output of the target language through a "drive facilitate evaluate" cycle. This study aims to explore the principles of grammar construction teaching based on POA, and take the teaching design of compound noun phrases as an example to demonstrate the application of these principles in practical teaching, in order to make up for the shortcomings of existing teaching methods.

2. Teaching Principles of Grammar Structures Based on POA

The POA teaching principle aims to address the problem of the disconnect between theory and practice in foreign language teaching, emphasizing language teaching in context. Its core includes: 1) taking communicative meaning as the starting point, viewing grammatical structures as the interactive result of syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic information, emphasizing the presentation of speech act scenarios, ensuring the authenticity, cognitive challenge, and appropriateness of communicative scenarios; 2) Emphasis should be placed on induction and output, encouraging students to summarize and generalize grammatical structures from language examples. Teachers should provide rich language materials to guide students in summarizing target constructions, and set output activities at the levels of vocabulary, phrases, sentences, and discourse to increase the frequency of using target constructions; 3) High frequency reproduction of target constructions establishes a stable connection between form and meaning through repeated exposure, abstraction, and categorization of cognitive processing. Utilizing evaluative teaching methods such as self-evaluation and peer evaluation, high-frequency reproduction of target constructions promotes the solidification of learners' mental constructions.

Analysis of Three Grammar Teaching Cases

In depth analysis of the importance of compound noun phrases in written English and their difficulties in second language learning, especially for native Chinese English learners. Compound noun phrases are composed of a central noun and its modifiers before and after it, and their complexity differs significantly between English and Chinese, leading learners to face challenges in the acquisition process. In order to support learners in better mastering this grammar structure, this study proposes a grammar construction teaching design based on POA (Output Oriented Approach).

4 Discussion

The paper discusses the influence of grammar views on teaching concepts, principles, and methods, emphasizing the compatibility between construction grammar and POA teaching methods. Based on the three basic characteristics of construction grammar, three teaching principles are proposed: starting from communicative meaning, emphasizing induction and output, and high-frequency reproduction of target constructions. These principles correspond to the driving, facilitating, and evaluating stages of the POA teaching process, and achieve the characteristic construction of the target structure through circular teaching activities. Teachers should integrate these principles into teaching based on the characteristics of the target grammar structure, promote the connection between form and meaning for learners, and form and solidify the target structure.

5 Conclusion and Inspiration

This study applies POA to grammar construction teaching, proposes three teaching principles, and illustrates them through a teaching case of compound noun phrases. The study demonstrates how to analyze the form, meaning, and pragmatic function of grammatical structures, select teaching materials, and design teaching based on teaching principles. Teachers should choose the timing of teaching based on learners' language proficiency, from easy to difficult. Future research can verify and optimize teaching principles, and study the development of new grammar textbooks based on POA to meet current grammar teaching needs.
